This collective work explores the points of contact between cinema and the historical and philosophical traditions of materialism. The articles brought together propose to rewrite the description of the visual and sound matter of images in a critical work that would take into account the socio-political dimension of the forms of production – technical, economic, ecological – of the works. Asserting itself against the tendential depoliticization of the notion of materialism, this book is driven by the conviction that the reevaluation of historical materialist thought and the development of contemporary approaches can constitute a salutary way out of the impasses of the post-theoretical era. He would thus like to plead for a political conception of materiality, and conversely, for a material understanding of politics.
