Description
about Watermen:
In 1966, Holly Fisher and co-director Romas V. Slezas filmed the annual Skipjack race off Annapolis, Maryland, focusing particularly on local hero, skipjack captain "Daddy Art" Daniels, who won the race that day. Over the next three years, they filmed Daniels, his family, his African American crew, and his colleagues oystering, at home, singing and preaching in church, at a high school graduation, the last sailmaker (in Wenona, MD), as well as three generations presented (in 1967) on local Maryland television, thus illustrating the gradual disappearance of a way of life on the Chesapeake Bay.
The film tells the simple story of fishermen working aboard the last fleet of working sailboats in North America, and it is perhaps also the narrative of manifest destiny playing out in an isolated corner of American culture.
