Description
A profile of the great photographer Edward Steichen (1879-1973), shot near the end of his life, this film traces his life and many of his best-known works. Filmed at his home, it contains scenes of Steichen using his large-format camera, and includes his own reflections on his work and aesthetic, as well as commentary from his wife Johanna. Since the beginning of the century, Steichen was an active advocate of the idea that photography was an art, and as director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1947-1962), he was responsible for the The Family of Man exhibition, one of the most influential photography exhibitions ever mounted.
Raised in Wisconsin where his family from Luxembourg emigrated in 1889, Steichen was recruited by Alfred Stieglitz into the Photo-Secession starting in 1902 and would play a leading role there. He notably introduced the French avant-garde, in painting and sculpture, which he discovered during several stays in Paris, and also established himself as a masterful photographer. (musee-orsay.fr)
