Jay Rosenblatt, who has been making short films since the early 1980s, creates films that address a variety of themes — from birth and childhood to religious faith, tyranny, and death. Often broadcast on public television and at film festivals, Rosenblatt's films are consistently recognized for their unique style and his commitment to taking risks.
"I used to make traditional narrative films with actors and found it stressful. (...) I was working on a project at the time — a filmed sequence for a theater piece — that required archival footage. The need to use existing images led me to the optical printer, a machine that allows a filmmaker to manipulate already-shot footage in different and new ways. It was a real discovery for me, and I began to turn more and more toward the use of found footage to create my films.
(...) I wasn't trying to mask the 'found footage' aspect, or deliver a continuous narrative thread, but rather to juxtapose elements."
(excerpts from the San Francisco Examiner, October 29–30, 2005, and the Miami New Times, July 26, 2001)
