CONTENTS
First Tests: Kodak Super 8 Camera
Two Americans and the editors of SUPER 8 magazine share their experiences with the new Kodak Super 8 camera. Is it still Super 8? How does the LCD screen work, how does synchronized sound via SD cards work, which C-mount lenses give the best results with the camera?
Dieter Rams: How Nizo Was Reinvented
Recently surfaced photos show design pontiff Dieter Rams with one of the first designs of the Braun Nizo. Reason enough for SUPER 8 magazine to trace in detail the history of these legendary cameras.
Holly Fink: Beckenbauer and Super 8
"Good Friends" is the name of the series produced by UFA-Fiction for RTL+ about the rise of FC Bayern Munich. Franz Beckenbauer, Sepp Maier, Gerd Müller and many other key players in the team's success are highlighted in individual episodes and portrayed by actors at the top of their game. There are also several scenes that were specially shot in Super 8. The camera that produced these scenes is itself a main character in one episode: the Leicina Special. Director of photography Holly Frank tells us about the making of this extraordinary series.
A Cold Set? Do Super 8 Cameras Work Well in Winter?
A survey of 30 active filmmakers reveals the most common breakdowns and the most reliable cameras that still work below 0 degrees. Plus: tips for filming in snow and freezing temperatures.
Titles, Dissolves and Other Devilish Tricks
Pre-made titles for vacation trips, dissolves that allow transitions from one subject to another, or pre-fabricated film scenes that suggest to the viewer that the amateur was even allowed to film in the cockpit—all elements that were rejected by some but enthusiastically used by others. The highlight of this rarely considered market niche: adhesive sheets stuck directly onto the film to transition from one scene to another using black patterns. The glued films thickened the stock and made the projector vibrate properly.
Super 8 with Spring Mechanism
There wasn't just one. The last issue of SUPER 8 magazine was devoted to the Russian Quartz camera, described as the only Super 8 camera with a spring motor. We now know: That's not true. Bell & Howell built at least three models in the United States that also worked without an electric motor. We examined them.
