Description
"By film I mean optical rhythm… to see only movement, organized movement - this awakens, provokes opposition, triggers reflexes, but also - perhaps - pleasure. This film offers no 'anchor points' that one might resort to in one's memories; one is left exposed, compelled to 'feel,' to follow the rhythm, the breath, the heartbeat... and the highs and lows of the phenomenon may perhaps allow us to know what truly feeling and sensing is, namely a process, MOVEMENT."
— Hans Richter, 1924.
A promoter of Dada and Surrealism, Richter was one of the first to recognize the possibilities that cinema offers to artists. He was one of the pioneers of avant-garde cinema alongside Léger, Duchamp, Man Ray, Picabia, Cocteau and Dali. Later, in New York, his teaching influenced numerous filmmakers of the "New American Cinema."
