Description
A major figure in experimental cinema, Len Lye was also a renowned kinetic sculptor, innovative theorist, painter and writer. He invented 'direct cinema' – films made without a camera – by painting and scratching on film stock, re-editing footage from other films, exposing film to the shadow of various objects, or employing a number of experimental color printing techniques.
"Since one is capable of composing music, it should be possible to compose motion. After all, melodic figures exist, so why shouldn't figures of motion exist?"
— Len Lye
