Description
Rock Hudson's Home Movies is a collage film whose true star is the "selected passage." It's a revision of film history that reexamines Rock Hudson's films in light of what everyone now knows about him—essentially that he was homosexual and died of AIDS. Rock Hudson is a unique paradox—the paradigm of on-screen virility who happens to be homosexual. The fictional construction that was Rock Hudson transforms into a text to be read or reread in many ways—but all roads lead to Rome. Rock Hudson was as much a prisoner as a purveyor of sexual strategy and stereotypes. He is a prism through which one can explore the postulates of sexuality, gender coding, sexual role-playing in Hollywood films and, by extension, in 1950s and 1960s America.
