Description
A central figure of Italian experimental cinema in the 1970s, Paolo Gioli (1942-2022) developed, building on his initial training as a painter, a body of work comprising over thirty films between 1969 and 2017 that accompany and intersect with an internationally recognized photographic oeuvre. Through an eminently "wild" filmic approach elaborated with humble means, Gioli offers us a composite visual universe of fragments, as well as "cinema-effects" in their natural state, like so many latent phenomena that reshape the historiography of media technologies.
Composed of three essays written between 1995 and 2024, a long unpublished interview with the artist conducted in 2014, and a catalogue raisonné of his filmography, Quand l'œil tremble by Jean-Michel Bouhours offers a journey through the different facets and multiple inventions of Paolo Gioli's cinematographic work. As a preface, the book is introduced by a new essay by Georges Didi-Huberman.
Preface by Georges Didi-Huberman.
