Description
Born in Warsaw in 1936, Piotr Kamler trained as a fine arts student in his native city before settling in Paris in 1959, where his entire body of work would unfold. Through the ORTF Research Department led by Pierre Schaeffer, he collaborated with composers of musique concrète such as Bernard Parmegiani, Iannis Xenakis, François Bayle and Ivo Malec.
A solitary craftsman, he made his films from start to finish, from drawing to editing, populating his fables with a fantastic, baroque world of textures, colours and deep shadows. His only feature-length film, Chronopolis (1982), a landmark of animated science fiction, took five years to complete before its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The recipient of awards at numerous international festivals and appointed Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1975, Piotr Kamler stands as one of the most singular and quietly visionary figures in the history of animated cinema.
