Description
"In 2000, I organized a retrospective of Barbara's work at the Images festival, accompanied by a small monograph. The highlight of the show was a new film, Like a Dream That Vanishes, and when we saw it, everyone fell under her spell once again. This publication brings together some notes and reflections on her 16mm film work, which uses the hand-cranked Bolex camera as an instrument of philosophy." (Michael Hoolboom)
Barbara Sternberg has been making experimental films since the mid-seventies. Her films have been screened in North America and Europe in galleries and artist-run centers, including the prestigious Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre George Pompidou in Paris, and the Ontario Cinematheque in Toronto. Her films are part of the collections of Queen's University, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the National Gallery of Canada. Sternberg has also participated in gallery exhibitions with mixed media installations, performance art, and video. She was co-founder of Struts gallery in Sackville, New Brunswick, founding member of Pleasure Dome: The Film Artists' Screening Collective in Toronto, and taught film and visual arts at York University.
