Description
Messages brings together personal and lyrical films by Guy Sherwin, a major figure in British experimental cinema. The central work, Messages (1981–1984), reflects on childhood and language, inspired by Jean Piaget and Sherwin’s observations of his daughter’s development.
Active since the 1970s, Sherwin has explored a wide range of forms, including black-and-white silent films, live film performances, hand-made optical soundtracks, installations, and partly autobiographical works. Trained as a painter and later involved with the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative, he developed a strong interest in film form and structure.
His recent collaborations with Lynn Loo involve multi-projection and live optical sound. His work has been shown widely in festivals and galleries worldwide.
The DVD includes Messages, Flight, Prelude, Filter Beds, and Views from Home, along with a 60-page artist’s book and an essay by Nicholas Tucker.
