Description
Jonas Mekas, an irrepressible force in promoting and preserving experimental cinema, is also known for his fast-paced diary films. The film Award Presentation to Andy Warhol shows Mekas presenting Warhol with Film Culture's independent film award. His film Scenes from the Life chronicles not only Andy Warhol but also the social and cultural buzz surrounding him, set to a hypnotic rhythm by the Velvet Underground.
Willard Maas was the husband of filmmaker, painter, and actress Marie Menken. Their films share a lyrical lightness and a love for visual rhythms that jolt.
"Willard and Marie were the last great bohemians. They wrote, filmed, and drank (their friends called them the 'scholarly drunks') and hung out with all the modern poets. Marie was one of the first to make a stop-time film. She made many short films, some with Willard, and she even made one about a day in my life."
