Description
"It's 7:30 PM at the Louvre on March 6, 2001. Charlemagne Palestine descends the steps of the grand auditorium with his red canvas suitcase. He wears a large Weston hat, several colorful scarves, orange pants, and red shoes. He sets his suitcase in front of the majestic Bösendorfer piano and pulls out a frog, a little monkey, a bear, a parrot… a few stuffed animals rescued from the dustbins of history. Charlemagne begins his concert before a full house. It takes no more than five minutes of Strumming Music for a spectator to stand up and cry scandal. The concert stops, Charlemagne suggests he leave the hall. After a heated exchange, the man with glasses sits back down. At the end of the concert, I see the same person congratulating Charlemagne on his performance. What happened? What made him change his mind: the artist's Ukrainian origins, his belonging to the New York avant-garde in the early 70s (Tony Conrad, La Monte Young, John Cale, Taylor Mead, Terry Riley...), his electro-acoustic experimentation in Los Angeles (Morton Subotnick, Ingram Marshall), his video art (Nam June Paik), his connections with experimental cinema (Stan Brakhage), or his exile to Europe. The film has just begun…" In the form of an intimate confession and against a backdrop of period archives (videos, photos, and unreleased music), Charlemagne shares with us his quest for "the golden sound."
