Description
"The only great films in the history of cinema are those created in the spirit of the experimental filmmaker."
— Len Lye
A major figure in experimental cinema, Len Lye was also a renowned kinetic sculptor, innovative theorist, painter and writer. He invented 'direct cinema' – films made without a camera – by painting and scratching on film, reassembling outtakes from other films, exposing film in the shadow of various objects, or employing a number of experimental color printing techniques.
"Since one is able to compose music, it should be possible to compose motion. After all, there are melodic figures, why wouldn't there be figures of motion?"
— Len Lye
