Description
Available for the first time on DVD, Guy Sherwin's celebrated series of short films, Short Film Series, is a unique collection of interconnected 3-minute 16mm films initiated in 1975. The series is united by certain formal constraints: each film lasts three minutes—the length of a reel of 16mm film—all are black and white and silent, and the screening order remains flexible. Beyond these parameters, there is a wide variety of imagery, ranging from portraits to still lifes to travel. These films exist on the border between movement and stillness, revealing their internal logic through active attention to the act of looking.
"100 reels of epiphanies, time-lapse studies, ordinary objects and scenes made strange and ambiguous."
— Michael O'Pray
"Sherwin's hallmark lies in the direct and concentrated image, fully exploiting the tonal range of black and white. This mastery is by no means rigid, as it seeks to capture, within the shot, a certain freedom and chance of the visible world."
— A. L. Rees
