Description
Fear, a psychological term describing a state of mind associated with dread and feelings of terror. Anxiety can be linked to a supposed or real threat, to specific or non-specific persons, situations, or objects. It is associated with certain ideas, fantasies, or expectations, as well as reactions of the nervous system. Anxiety can be temporarily limited to particular individual situations or to occasional psychological "wounds," but it can also manifest as a chronic condition depending on its psychic evolution. By virtue of scientific rationality, social progress has largely eliminated the dominant real fears arising from external threats of nature that humanity faced in earlier epochs, but has, on the other hand, generated new existential anxieties of political and social origin.
