Jonas Mekas, Adolfas Mekas
Letters Home
This magnificent and mysterious book contains previously unpublished pages featuring a collection of letters that the famous brothers Jonas and Adolfas Mekas sent from America to the village of Semeniškiai, in the Biržai district of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic. They were all addressed to the most important recipient in their lives—their mother, Elzbieta Mekienė.

“This collection of letters by Adolfas and Jonas Mekas demonstrates the importance of writing as a means of preserving memory. For many years, Jonas Mekas kept journals before they were gradually replaced by the constant filming of his life and surroundings. These letters, and the intimate perspective they offer, are invaluable documents of their time, while also marking the disappearance of the art of letter-writing.
One day, Jonas told me: ‘The future will be determined by this present moment, and this moment, at this precise second, will determine the next one.’ Let us make sure to remember this present moment as it was—partly shaped by the moments described by Adolfas and Jonas Mekas in their magnificent correspondence.”
