Description
Strongly influenced on one hand by abstract expressionist painting (especially Mark Rothko) and, on the other, by the radicalism of Peter Kubelka's films—of which he would publish the first monograph—Christian Lebrat's films are characterized by the decomposition of the image into particles (bands of light) with the aim of exploding the image frame and creating unprecedented color intensities. Abstraction is not an end in itself, but the outcome of an approach that also expresses itself through more "narrative," even "conceptual" films. More recently he has returned to performance by integrating direct painting on film into his work, while simultaneously developing a video œuvre in the form of projection or installation.
