FRAGILE SYSTEMS by Stephen Broomer
Description
Christine Lucy Latimer's films and videos defy their mediums: they reveal the fragility of the systems that underpin media, push the limits of image-making machines, and embrace the flaws and frailties of vision. Almost all of Latimer's work is silent, yet nothing in it is truly quiet: her images evoke the hums, clicks, and mechanical groans of the technologies with which they were made. Her work began long after most of the formats she employs had become obsolete. Rejecting the universal nostalgia for the old camera and the old image, Latimer's works look resolutely toward the present; they are at once playful, unruly, ethereal, and abstract. Supremely self-aware yet imbued with mystery, they resemble séances in which the ghosts of the machine manifest.
