Described as "Fellini and Bergman combined in one beautifully possessed body," Maya Deren is arguably the most important and innovative avant-garde filmmaker in American cinema history. Using locations ranging from the Hollywood hills to Haiti in the 1940s and 1950s, Deren made hypnotic films such as AT LAND, RITUAL IN TRANSFIGURED TIME, and her masterpiece, MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON, which won a prestigious international experimental film prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1947.
Using excerpts from these films, IN THE MIRROR fluidly and effectively interweaves archival footage and observations from devotees and contemporaries such as Stan Brakhage and Jonas Mekas, with an original score by legendary experimental jazz musician John Zorn. Documentarian Martina Kudlácek has created not only a fascinating portrait of an innovative and influential artist, but also a masterfully crafted introduction to her work of striking beauty and poetry.
