Description
Here is the very first and oldest collection of Japanese pop art films since Bruce Conner's A MOVIE (1958)!
After the closure of the "Yomiuri Independent" art exhibition, organized by a press publisher in 1963, Takahiko Iimura, Koichiro Ishizaki, Nobuhiko Ohbayashi, Yoichi Takabayashi, Kenji Kanesaka, Jyu‑shin Sato, and Donald Richie launched an independent film festival to highlight the differences between non-commercial or non-narrative cinema and conventional cinema.
With only one rule: 1 reel of film = 2 minutes running time, this open exhibition was addressed not only to filmmakers but also to other artists, including Genpei Akasegawa, Sho Kazakura, Yasunao Tone, and Sakio Hirata.
This selection of 16 films was rediscovered in a hidden collection of avant-garde films after 50 years! This DVD also includes interviews with Takahiko Iimura, audio commentaries, and discussions with Ohbayashi. It also features the Film Independents Manifest and other published documents. The roots of 1960s Japanese underground culture are gathered here!
