Description
Paris, 1976: Centre Pompidou has yet to open its doors, yet it already asserts its ambition to include in its programming artistic practices that had previously remained invisible in museums. It is during this prefiguration moment that the "exhibition" Une histoire du cinéma is organized. What history is at stake? Throughout the screenings, an alternative narrative to the dominant cinematic canons takes shape, on the margins of the industry and auteur cinema. Encouraged by its new director Pontus Hulten, and conceived by Austrian filmmaker Peter Kubelka, this radical proposition permanently inscribes experimental and avant-garde cinema into the collections of the Musée national d'art moderne.
Juxtaposing the original catalogue with a collection of previously unpublished documents and interviews, new texts and period publications, this book traces a political and cultural history punctuated by controversies, symptomatic of the tumultuous relations between the underground and the institutional milieu. Today, at a time when the presence of the moving image within collections and exhibitions appears self-evident, Une histoire du cinéma is undoubtedly the missing piece for understanding the becoming of cinema in the museum.
