Description
Hilary is unquestionably one of the most original and talented filmmakers of American independent cinema, he is a genre unto himself, a master of his art
— Amos Vogel
Hilary Harris's wild ride through Robert Moses's New York recalls the classic city symphonies of the 1920s, adapted to the "go go go" energy of the moment. The film can simply be enjoyed as an eruption of graphic forms [...] but it's ultimately his pure fascination with the moving form of the highway that brings the screen to life. Bronze Medal at the Brussels International Festival of Experimental Film in 1958, Highway now appears as a quick hook between "On the Road" (published the previous year) and the first films of the French New Wave (released around the same time).
— Max Goldberg
Why make films? To enrich our perception of the surrounding reality. My goal is to shake people out of their preconceived ideas.
