Description
Oxide, in two parts, is the digital transfer of Super 8 and 16mm films that underwent oxidation before and after photochemical processing, with the magnetized oxidation then recorded on tape using playback heads of different sizes. The version presented here is a digital, single-screen iteration of the film performance Oxide (ii)+(iii), developed during a residency at Sound and Music and the no.w.here laboratory in London in 2011.
Beyond the creation of Oxide (ii)+(iii), the moment of projection has shifted from the realm of the live and ephemeral to that of a static, non-representational medium: the DVD. Comparable to compiling a concert recording into a studio version, this work reverses the process of self-mechanization, no longer being a film bound by the linear sequence of capture–development–synchronization–projection.
