Description
Shot over a six-year period, with a shoestring budget and a cast of non-professionals, The Mad Songs of Fernanda Hussein blends fiction and documentary to examine the repercussions of the Gulf War on three New Mexico residents: Fernanda, a mother separated from her husband who has returned to live in Egypt; Rafael, an activist high school student; and Carlos, a veteran soldier who comes home haunted by horrific visions. "If I had to define the origins of the project, I'd say that I made The Mad Songs of Fernanda Hussein so as not to go mad. I carried within me a silent rage, not only during the Gulf War, but throughout the years that followed, as I gradually discovered the impact of this conflict and its irremediable consequences on people's lives."
