"While the autobiographical gestures of Garrel's later works have become familiar, his early work with Nico remains largely unknown and understudied. Yet it was this young Garrel who captivated French cinephiles like Henri Langlois, who considered his film La Cicatrice intérieure (1972) a masterpiece, or Gilles Deleuze, who praised Garrel's 'cinema of revelation' in 1985, in his second volume on cinema. Deleuze's reading, based almost exclusively on the films of the 1960s and 1970s, describes a 'liturgy of bodies,' a cinema imbued with devotion, almost sacred."
