Description
The heart of filmmaker Friedl vom Gröller's work consists of portraits—whether she photographs friends, acquaintances, family members, filmmakers, artists, or simply customers, each of them mostly looking directly at the lens. Since 1972, Kubelka has also positioned herself in front of the camera for her project Jahresportraits (Annual Portraits), in which she unflinchingly documents the aging process. The juxtaposition of an individual photograph with many other photographs has become the structural credo of Kubelka's artistic practice. The monograph focuses on individual series combined with contemporary portrait series, showing for example artists from Senegal, which are associated with others from Kubelka's archives. In order to multiply perspectives, individual portraits are juxtaposed with others (double portraits), or even more. In addition, a journal on muralist Pape Mamadou Samb, alias Papisto Boy, and a USB key containing a selection of the artist's films are included with the book.
