Description
While experimental filmmakers "expand" the artistic field through an exploration of the powers, modes of distribution, or even performance of the moving image, in the age of the Anthropocene, these practices contain the hope of an entirely different expansion: expanding our experience of nature.
Affixing flowers to film, burying film stock, inventing observation devices, letting the camera be affected by natural forces, engaging one's filming body in a symbiotic relationship with the environment, reconstituting ecosystems in projection: the ecologies of experimental cinema proposed here constitute forms of practice and engagement that awaken a heightened sensitivity to the living through cooperative relationships, entrust other existents with the roles of subjects and agents of filmic processes, and ultimately reshape the economy of filmmaking. Thus unfold ecologies of perception, of the medium, of production, and a multinaturalism that contribute to restoring our sensory connection with the living.
Addressing technical, aesthetic, and anthropological questions of cinema, Expanded Nature – Écologies du cinéma expérimental considers the ways in which filmmakers and collectives from different parts of the globe form community with other non-human existents and work through their films to deconstruct human privilege. At the crossroads of disciplines, anthropologists, philosophers, filmmakers and artists, researchers in visual studies come together and investigate another history of cinema, written from nature's point of view.
"At the heart of an unfortunately burning topicality in every sense of the term, Expanded Nature proves to be essential reading both for viewers unfamiliar with experimental forms but concerned with understanding the world they live in and for specialists eager to delve into another history of cinema, one written from nature's point of view."
