Description
Ever since I've been making films I've always been interested in the fact that the cinematic image – the image on the screen – doesn't exist at all. It's an immaterial image: you can't touch it, it's only light, projected light.
If you're a filmmaker, you have to deal with this very strong characteristic of cinema: on one hand you work with celluloid which is a very concrete medium, you can hold it in your hands, cut it, work frame by frame and so on, and on the other hand, when this celluloid is projected, the concrete images transform into projected light. Thus, when you make a film, you must keep in mind that the celluloid on which the images are impressed will be transformed into light by the projector. For this reason, the filmmaker's work essentially has to do with rhythm, speed, movement and the mutations of light.
