Description
Paul de Nooijer (* 1943) has been making films for over 40 years — an impressive achievement in a field not favored by public interest and funding. His reputation rests solidly on works largely based on "illusionism" — the interdependence between film and photography. Since his son Menno (*1967) joined this "family art enterprise" as a full partner in 1989, their films have become faster and more colorful. But above all, the artistic orientation has slightly evolved, moving from a focus on photography and film to a combination with theater and performance. De Nooijer has consciously opted for a blend of traditional disciplines grounded in the ideals of the Gesamtkunstwerk and the interdisciplinary theater of Oscar Schlemmer's Bauhaus School. In this concept, photography and film are part of a larger total event.
