Description
Leicina Special (1972–1977)
The Leicina Special is Leica’s second generation cine camera, succeeding the Leicina 8S and 8V models of the early 1960s and designed for Kodak’s Super 8 cartridge format. Manufactured in Wetzlar, Germany, it was conceived as the heart of a universal Super 8 system for demanding enthusiasts, professional filmmakers and scientific applications.
Lens mount
Equipped with a robust Leica M mount, it directly accepts Leica M rangefinder lenses. With adapters, it also supports Leica screw mount lenses, Leica SLR/Leicaflex lenses, Arriflex lenses, M42 screw mount lenses and Minolta/Canon mount lenses. (Note: not compatible with C-mount lenses.)
Optics
• Leicina 6-66 mm f/1.8 Optivaron (Schneider Kreuznach, 15 elements/12 groups): motorized zoom lens with close focusing down to a 29 x 22 mm field of view; renowned for its sharpness at full aperture.
Standard TTL CdS follow-pointer metering. The optional Leicinamatic module (with the Optivaron lens) adds automatic exposure and fade-in/fade-out functions.
Viewfinder
Bright, flicker-free reflex viewfinder, 17x magnification, 18 mm eye relief, 4.2 mm exit pupil (full field visible with glasses), +/-3 diopter adjustment. Three interchangeable focusing screens available: microprism, split image (diagonal wedges), and aerial image with reticle (for use with a microscope, endoscope, or extreme telephoto lens).
Shooting Speeds
Click-stop speeds of 9, 18, 25, and 54 frames per second, regulated by a tachometric alternator and a variable gain amplifier for constant voltage. Low-inertia, ironless armature motor ensures consistent exposure in both continuous and single-frame shooting. Integrated frame counter for precise timing of slow-motion sequences; LED indicator for long exposures.
Power
5 AA batteries in a removable, angled case that also serves as a front support; can be replaced by an external power supply (e.g., in cold weather).
This camera has been refurbished and fully tested with film, yielding excellent results. This equipment comes with a 90-day warranty. If you experience a malfunction with your camera within 90 days, you may return it for repair or replacement. The casing shows slight signs of wear. Sold with the original lens cap and carrying case.
