Description
"Over the decades, we see Arrietta's cinematography gain in confidence, but also in pessimism. Vacanza permanente is a test of solitude: Paris was a feast, Madrid no longer is; a solitude always made of comings and goings (the shot of Cocteau's angel in Le Testament d'Orphée reappears, as it did forty years earlier, in l'Imitation de l'ange). Arrietta organizes the uncertain, the half-light, and the mind fixes on chimeras that end up, sooner or later, materializing. One imagines his pictorial work, for Arrietta began as a painter before making films—it's up to us to invent his apartment as a cabinet of curiosities: Vacanza permanente offers a composition of it."
