Description
"In the wake of May '68, Arrietta became the first underground filmmaker. His fairy-tale universe is populated with new angels: his transvestite friends, the Gazolines, who would become the heroines of Les Intrigues de Sylvia Couski (1974) and Tam-Tam (1976). The themes of Arrietta's cinema come into focus: artists dream of becoming works of art themselves, the body is envisioned as the site of new creation, identity is invented from scratch."
— Capricci
"Tam-Tam reveals desires and repressions through a subversion of social archetypes (ambassadors, stars, artists) and sexual ones (homophiles, transvestites, transsexuals), converting them into a razor-sharp testimony on a certain form of unease: the crisis of identity. [...] Arrietta offers a dazzling vision of these micro-universes apprehended from within, from the very place of their oppression: an admirable example of cinéma-vérité revisited and corrected by a tireless pursuit of expressive means."
