Less known than Jean Eustache, Philippe Garrel, or Marguerite Duras, whose friend he was, Adolpho Arrietta is nonetheless one of the great underground filmmakers of the 1970s and 1980s.
The universe of this cinema magician, a worthy heir to Jean Cocteau, stretches from Madrid to Paris, but also from Jean Marais to Enrique Vila-Matas, from Cahiers du cinéma to Les Gasolines: a whole legendary story, both glamorous and broke, which brilliantly comes back to life here.
The book consists of a long interview conducted in July 2009 in Madrid by Philippe Azoury. Over three days, their dialogue delved into the making of Flammes (1978). Together, Azoury and Arrietta discuss the filmmaker's other films but, above all, an entire world, a poetic, free, rebellious approach to making cinema as one lives. From theory to practice, from one era to another, this work allows the reader to immerse themselves in the cinema and culture of the late 1970s.
THE AUTHOR
Adolpho Arrietta was born in Madrid in 1942. He moved to France in 1967, where he directed his first feature films. Considered in Europe as a pioneer of independent cinema, he draws inspiration from a poetic language close to that of Jean Cocteau. The filmmaker marked the 1970s with films such as Le Jouet criminel with Jean Marais, Les Intrigues de Sylvia Couski (1974) - which won the Grand Prize for "Different Cinema" in Toulon - Flammes (1978), Grenouilles (1983), and Belle Dormant (2016). Still active, he has since directed several short and medium-length films, works for Spanish television, and played a role in Albert Serra's last film, The Story of My Death (2013). Philippe Azoury was a film critic for Libération, and also contributed to Les Inrockuptibles, Cahiers du cinéma, and Vogue. At Capricci, he published À Werner Schroeter, qui n'avait pas peur de la mort (2010), Philippe Garrel en substance (2013), and Jim Jarmusch, une autre allure (2016).
