Description
“They say that Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did but she had to do it backwards and in high heels. The same could be said about Adolfas Mekas, though maybe not in high heels.”
— Pip Chodorov, in the booklet
Adolfas Mekas (1925-2011) left Lithuania during the Second World War with his older brother Jonas. The two arrived in New York in 1949 and founded the magazine Film Culture together. His first feature, Hallelujah the Hills (1963), was shown at Cannes, won a prize at Locarno and screened at the first New York Film Festival; Godard praised it in the Cahiers du cinéma. He wrote many screenplays and worked as an editor and production manager before founding the film department at Bard College in 1971, where he taught for 32 years. The booklet gathers texts by Pip Chodorov, John Pruitt and Joel Schlemowitz, including Schlemowitz’s apothegms of St. Tula.
