Children and Ruins. The title says it all: the future is linked to the past. Shot in 16mm in a brightly lit ruin, a mute boy and a girl of few words are the protagonists of this beautiful cinematic ritornello. They are joined by an adult, an unsettling figure whose identity remains unknown. Early cinema is clearly the model here, and it nourishes every shot with abstraction, a bold play of contrasts, repetition, and narrative economy. This spellbinding maze-like experience tests our faith in a cinema that reclaims mystery, to which Alain Mazars convincingly invites us.
-Jean-Pierre Rehm, FIDMarseille
I was deeply impressed by Children and Ruins. It works with themes and motifs that are detached from the urgencies of the moment to reach deep strata of our social and cultural experience, where they can dialogue with allegories, myths, darkness – in short, everything that makes up the bedrock of our anxieties, hopes and desires.
-Frédéric Tachou, FCDEP
A frantic quest for childhood, Beyond Memory is a film that captures the essence
-Xavier Villetard, Libération
Beyond Memory is a beautiful film, with extraordinary simplicity in production and an equally extraordinary wealth of poetry.
-F. Alphandéry, L'Humanité
