Karel and Bozena long for a child. However, their wish is not fulfilled. One day Karel finds a tree root in the garden, looking a bit like a toddler. Karel treats the root and after a while Bozena recognizes the brown creature as the child she always wanted. They call it Otik. Nourished by Bozena’s ample motherly instinct Otik miraculously comes to life, turning out a hungry little fellow. Fate has it, that Bozena cannot feed him enough and Otik becomes a hazard for his surroundings. Desperately Karel locks the little monster up in the cellar. A girl next door, looking for a play mate, sets Osik free and feeds him. Then some of the locals begin to disappear.
