  • Takahiko Iimura

    Being one of the first to dive into experimental film and video, Takahiko Iimura can be classified as a pioneer artist of this genre in Japan. Iimura has worked with film since 1960 and with video since 1970 while living both in New York and Tokyo. Despite getting his start in Japan, his work has gained him international notoriety and has been featured in major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum, New York, Anthology Film Archives, New York, Centre George Pompidou, Paris, the National Gallery Jeu de Paume, Paris, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Reina Sofia National Museum, Madrid, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo. Furthermore, Iimura has been bestowed with an artist residency at the German Academy of Arts, Berlin, and Bellagio Rockefeller Foundation Study Center, Bellagio, Italy.

    Iimura has more recently been involved in utilizing computers, has published more than 20 DVDs/CD-ROMs, as well as written books on film, video, and multimedia, one of which was published in English and is entitled “The Collected Writings of Takahiko Iimura.”

  • Isidore Isou

    Isidore Isou (born 29 January 1925 in Botosani, Romania, and died on July 28 2007 in Paris) is known for founding the movement of lettrisme in 1945. This movement was inspired by Dada and Surrealism. Isou was not only gifted when it came to the French economy of the Twentieth Century, he was also skilled in various artistic fields: poetry, painting, film, theater and literature.

  • Ken Jacobs

    Ken Jacobs (born in New York on May 25, 1933) is an American experimental filmmaker who focuses on underground cinema. Jacobs has directed numerous works, including: Star Spangled Banner (2004), a film of seven hours of lost footage, Tom, Tom, The Piper's Son (1969) which admitted him a place at the National Film Registry in 2007 and Blonde Cobra (1963). In the early 1970s, Jacobs introduced the term 'Paracinema' which refers to the technique in which the director creates film experiences without the use of conventional film technology.

    Along with Larry Gottheim, Jacobs plays a role in the creation of the film department at Harpur College, located in Binghamton University. From 1969 to 2003, Jacobs teaches in this same film department.

    His son Azazel Jacobs is also a filmmaker.

    Jacobs received the Maya Deren award at the American Film Institute.

  • Takashi Ito

    Takashi Ito (born in 1956 in Fukuoka, Japan) is one of the leading experimental filmmakers in Japan. Ito graduated from Art and Technology Department of Kyushu Institute of Design in 1983. During his studies, he debuted his film SPACY in 1981. Inagaki, a fellow classmate of his who was also a filmmaker, was responsible for the sound effects of the film SPACY.

    Seeing Ito’s talent from a young age, it could be said that he was a premature virtuoso.
